KUKA presents its new robot "iiwa" thanks to the Virtual Showroom that uses Mixed Reality, the customer can now make a real and immersive experience of the product.

The company is considered one of the global leaders in intelligent automation solutions. It offers among its products: industrial robot system with different capacities, production machines that allow the integration of standardized systems and components in customized production processes, and finally individual and complete production systems.

CHALLENGE

KUKA is going to present its new robot “iiwa”, the first robot manufactured in series with sensitive capacities, it is also the first prepared for collaboration between people and robots. The problem with the product is to find a way to present it in a complete way, with the possibility to offer all the necessary information, that in this case is a lot and specific. In addition, there is the requirement to be able to experience the robot, to see how it works, so that the potential customer can realize what are the real benefits of the product , becoming a motivated potencial buyer. For a technology company like KUKA, consistency in product presentation is also important, in order to maintain the image and authority of the company.

SOLUTION

KUKA‘s problems were solved thanks to the Virtual Showroom with the use of Mixed Reality that allows showing real production situations so that the visitor can analyze and the processes, benefits and advantages of the robot. Through Mixed Reality we can carry out simulations of the real experience of using the product. In a simple way and making use of its sensors, the user can perform a series of movements manually that the robot will then automatically answer. In addition, KUKA has the possibility to present itself to customers and competitors, using an experiential and immersive technological tool that allows a complete understanding of the new “iiwa” robot. Through our product InnoSHOWROOM we overcome the physical limitations of the exhibition space. In addition, virtual recreation offers an immersion with nothing to obstruct vision, impossible in a real environment.

TECHNOLOGY

For this project we have opted for the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality device, which allows us to achieve the highest graphic quality since it works connected to a computer.

The Oculus Insight system works on a room scale, allowing users to move around a real space to interact with the app.

The Rift S scope has five sensors to track movement, with a system that works from the inside out. That is, the closest position tracking is enhanced to improve the sensation when grasping and pointing to objects in the game. The Oculus Rift S also allow us to see the environment without having to remove our helmet.

Training VR en DAM

Gracias a la formación de los técnicos a través del uso del modelo 3D de Realidad Virtual ahora DAM puede cumplir tareas de mantenimiento y reparación de las instalaciones en completa seguridad.

Depuración de Aguas del Mediterráneo (DAM) es una compañía que tiene más de 20 años de experiencia en la gestión de plantas de tratamiento de aguas. Su principal actividad es el mantenimiento y la conservación de estaciones depuradoras de aguas residuales y potables así como de desaladoras. La misión de la empresa es proporcionar un servicio integral de depuración, gestión de residuos y construcción de infraestructuras que contribuya al cuidado del medioambiente de nuestra comunidad.

DESAFÍO

Con el tiempo la empresa ha ido ampliando su línea de negocio y se ha especializado en: ingeniería, obras hidráulicas y emisarios submarinos; gestión de residuos biosólidos; y, por último, Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación (I+D+i) para tener una ventaja competitiva en el mercado europeo actual.
El problema principal se encuentra en las instalaciones de DAM que pueden producir incidencias y situaciones de emergencia, como por ejemplo, inundaciones de módulos o accidentes laborales, que ponen en alto riesgo a los trabajadores y las instalaciones de la empresa. De consecuencia tendrán que gastar mucho tiempo y recursos al fin de solucionar los problemas, entonces surgió naturalmente la necesidad de optimizar los procesos de mantenimiento y reparación de las instalaciones.

SOLUCIÓN

Para dar respuesta a estos problemas de la mejor forma posible, la compañía ha apostado por utilizar la Realidad Virtual en su planta EDAR de Alzira-Carcaixent (Valencia). Entonces, a través de un modelo virtual en 3D de la EDAR, sus técnicos han recibido una formación específica y aprendieron a ejecutar correctamente y en total seguridad las tareas que tienen que ver con el mantenimiento y la reparación de las instalaciones. La experiencia virtual es totalmente inmersiva y en ella, el usuario, a través de las gafas de Realidad Virtual (VR), tiene la oportunidad de experimentar de forma directa la sensación de estar dando solución a las incidencias que pueden ocurrir, teniendo así una experiencia concreta y funcional con mayor probabilidad de éxito.
